At Aegir, our English curriculum is designed to ensure that communication, reading and writing are accessible, engaging and purposeful for every young person. Our aim is to equip pupils with the skills they need to communicate effectively, understand a range of texts, and apply literacy in everyday life.

To achieve this, we:

· Deliver a clear, progressive curriculum across three pathways, supporting small-step development from early communication through to Functional Skills accreditation for pupils aged 11–19.

· Use a wide range of high-quality texts, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry and media, exposing pupils to different genres, authors and diverse perspectives that reflect the world around them.

· Teach reading and writing through meaningful contexts, enabling pupils to understand purpose, audience and structure across a range of text types.

· Place communication at the centre of learning, developing speaking, listening and interaction skills through discussion, role play and supported communication approaches, including AAC where appropriate.

· Make links across the curriculum, particularly with humanities and PSHE, so that pupils can apply their literacy skills in real-life and relevant contexts.

· Support pupils to develop confidence and independence, enabling them to express their ideas, opinions and experiences clearly.

· Provide appropriate accreditation pathways that reflect pupils needs and prepare them for further education, employment and adult life.
